Mueller's pearlside ( Maurolicus
muelleri )

Picture and text:

A Mueller's pearlside
appears in front of the camera. This mesopelagic fish travels
vertical in the open waters. In the evening it follows the dusk from
50-150 metres against the surface. There it hunts with the aid of
its eyes. When the twilight is over, it sinks down to deeper waters
and travel towards the surface again in the morning before it spends
the day in the deep.
This image was captured around midnight in a fjord on the West Coast
of Norway. A school of pearlsides kept the photographer busy for the
whole dive.
