Amphipod bites shark .

Picture and text:  Rudolf Svensen

In the ocean it is not only the larger animals that eats the small, but in many cases, the small that eats the larger. This little shark, Velvet Belly, has a amphipod just behind its gills. The little crustacean is drinking the shark blood.
The Velvet Belly is normally found on deeper water, but migrates towards the surface during the night to feed on shrimps and other small animals. This image was captured at 45 meters of salt water in January in one of the deep fjords of the South West Coast of Norway.
Presumable can amphipods hassle the sharks till they die of exhaustion.
The ocean hides a lot of secrets. By capturing images and document the behaviour of the creatures of the sea, may we find answer to some of them.
