The little cuttlefish
Sepietta oweniana is a common sight during night dive in the winter
months. It is often spotted resting on the sea bed or gliding around
in the free water. It obviously does not like when a strange
creature is pointing his light against it, and it does a lot of
trick to get away from the annoying diver.
Usually it first tries to change colour and then blow out a little
cloud of ink while it shoots away. If this do not get rid of the
persecutor, it tries to spread out its arms, like the cuttle on the
image, to look big and nasty and scare the diver away.
The last thing it will do is to rest at the seabed and try to dig
itself down in the bottom.
If you should be lucky and meet a cuttlefish on your dive, I will
suggest that you spend some time with it. It will give you a great
experience.
