Hard hat diving .

Picture Erling Svensen and text:  Rudolf Svensen

Hard hat diving is a physical hard and demanding profession. The diver performs important tasks in harbours all over the world. Even though the hard hat equipment is designed more than hundred years ago, it is still the most used equipment for shallow commercial diving.
The insulation it gives the diver is far better than modern equipment.
On the image is a diver drillings holes in a rock to blow it away so the port activity will not be blocked. The work happens on five meters of water and the diver may stay down the whole day to do his work. His equipment is about 90 kilos heavy on shore, but can be made neutral or even give him uplift in the sea. This is adjusted through a valve in the helmet. A large compressor gives the diver and the tools the air they need to work at depth.
The helmet also has communication so that the diver may talk with his helper on shore.
