Both Atlantic Cod (
Gadus morhua ) and European Ling ( Molva molva ) belongs
to the Cod family. They are common fishes in Norwegian
waters and well known to fishermen, both commercial and
recreational. Both fishes are top-end predators and they
are also cannibals. A Cod is able to eat a family member
which has 70% of it’s own body size.
Atlantic Cod and Ling are, because they may reach a
weight of 60 and 35 kilos, well known to game fishers.
They both thrive on old shipwrecks where they hide and
hunt for smaller fishes that often lives on artificial
reefs.
While the Ling mostly occurs alone or in very few
numbers, the Cod is known to appear both single and in
large schools.
During the winter the Atlantic Cod stock moves close to
the shoreline to mate and lay their eggs. Especially
Lofoten in the north of Norway is famous for its
marvellous Cod fishing. |
