Grey Gunard |
Grey Gurnard (
Eutrigla gurnardus ) may grow to a size of 45 cm and 1.2
kilos. Yellow Gurnard ( Trigla lucerna ) , which is the
second of the Gurnard types which appear regular along
the Norwegian shoreline, can get as large as 75 cm and
5.2 kilos.
In the Norwegian language, the fishes are called “growl”.
This is du to the fact that the fish often make a
growling noise when it is hauled into a bout or on shore.
These growling sounds are made by vibrations from the
swim bladder. Both fishes thrive best on muddy or sandy
bottom where they hunt for bristle worms, crustaceous
and small fishes.
Although it is not well known among most people, the
Gurnard has white and good tasting meat. You just have
to look out for the sharp spikes on the gill lid when
you gut the fish.
The Gurnard appear from shallow water down to 150 metres.
Gurnards are regular spotted on night dives on the West
Coast of Norway. |
